There are certainly plenty of speculative attempts to lead the celebration back to ancient times (especially to the Roman luperkaliefirandet), but in serious research is usually all these guesses mayflower are taken with a hefty grain of salt. Halloween is a very dear festival which is as important as Christmas in many parts of North America. Some people commercialize anything (including Midsummer and Christmas) but that does not mean everyone does that! Or are we going to have some fun no holidays at all? From a widespread fear that someone might commercialize them?
When swerco describes "Halloween" as a silly practice, so I think he gives voice to a view that is common among Swedes. This perceived "ridiculous" is the Swedish version and not the original North American. The latter is considered to have a genuine mayflower background, probably founded by religious reasons, while the former (the Swedish) variant instituted for commercial reasons.
