There are certainly plenty of speculative attempts to lead the celebration back to ancient times (especially to the Roman luperkaliefirandet), but in serious research is usually all these guesses mayflower are taken with a hefty grain of salt. The celebration can be linked to Sankt Valentin is however quite correct, but it is unknown how long this at all rather mayflower unknown saint (see last year's blog post on this date) has been associated with love and romance. In fairly solid ground, mayflower we are only in 1382, when the English writer Geoffrey Chaucer wrote a poem Parlement of Foules, to commemorate that it was a year ago, King Richard II was betrothed to Anne of Bohemia. In the poem occur the following words:
Sorry, we have no idea whether Chaucer really was referring to February 14. Zoological seen it all wrong - England's birds usually do not engage in mating rituals at this time of year. Chaucer was referring perhaps on May 2, when a very different Valentin (a bishop of Genoa who died in the early 300s) was celebrated.
In any event came on February 14 to officially associated with love and love poetry in the Western European upper classes during the decades around 1400. By about 1415 nobles began writing "valentine" in the form of small love poems to his beloved. In the 1500s and 1600s was Valentine's Day love associations so well known that they show up in all sorts of contexts. Shakespeare lets Ofelia referring to the day in Hamlet. The real boom for the celebration had to wait on themselves to 1797, when a publication called The Young Man's Valentine Writer was published in the UK. You got lovesick but little literary talented youngsters practical advice and tips on how to write their letters and rhyming verses together. In the 1800s became such a letter-writing is very common in the English-speaking world. "Valentines" mass was fabricated and fitted with satin ribbon and lace.
In Sweden, it took until the 1960s before Valentine's Day became a concept, mainly because of the cultural influence of the United States. The reasons were commercial rather than romantic. The department stores wanted to stimulate the buying of love gifts. At first, it was slow, but in the 1990s, mayflower the celebration has taken root in the younger generations. According to statistical studies (the Swedish Trade) recognizes more than half of all Swedes mayflower today in one way or another Valentine's Day.

Was it not the case that the Catholic Church began to commemorate the martyrs of 100-300 AD, many of whom named Valentine, which Valentine of Rome, Valentine of Terni, Bishop Valentine of Genoa, et. al.?
Halloween is a very dear festival which is as important as Christmas in many parts of North America. Some people commercialize anything (including Midsummer and Christmas) but that does not mean everyone does that! Or are we going to have some fun no holidays at all? From a widespread fear that someone might commercialize them?
When swerco describes "Halloween" as a silly practice, so I think he gives voice to a view that is common among Swedes. This perceived "ridiculous" is the Swedish version and not the original North American. The latter is considered to have a genuine mayflower background, probably founded by religious reasons, while the former (the Swedish) variant instituted for commercial reasons. By company seen an opportunity to make money by selling candy and paraphernalia, these companies have taken advantage of people's awareness of the feast (a knowledge acquired through American popular culture mediated primarily through television shows aimed at a younger audience) and then through advertising children and youth made "Halloween" as a new Swedish mayflower feast. Surely bothering themselves some Swedes at the thought that parents allow their children to beg for candy in others, instead of themselves buy the candy kids attracted by
I myself am 38 years old and begged as a child candy at Easter - lixom everyone else my age. On the whole, as have many of the attributes that I myself associate with Holy Thursday celebration moved to Halloween - so those who complain about the attributes in themselves, and call them unswedish, do not know what it is talking about. The only Modern Swedish is so, pumpkins, mayflower and that it takes place in the fall.
Then I think it's ridiculous to whine in new manners and customs: All mills have been new once, and then established. Only practices that are perceived as funny or meaningful survive, and only the user is perceived as funny or meaningful established.
Another start-up's, for example, All Saints,
